Building a self sufficient movement

Late Wednesday night, after our last final, Jordan and I drove out to DC to make our court date Thursday morning. The commute is a hard one and my little PT Cruiser wasn't much help, but we've sort have become pros at it- after all, we did the same exact thing a few weeks back when we decided to disrupt the House with a song. Thursday night, April 14^th we headed out to DC to meet up with youth activists from all around the country who were ready to take a risk to inspire the 10,000 students attending Powershift that weekend. We sang an alternative version of the Star Spangled Banner, one that called for our congressmen to start standing up for our future- our right to clean air, water, and food- not big oil, gas, and coal. Disrupting congress is an arrestable action, something that we knew going in. But even though we were arrested and stayed in jail for over 6hrs, we had accomplished our goal. That monday, hundreds of activists stormed the Department of the Interior and stayed despite the threat of arrest. 21 stayed for arrest even after being threatened with felony charges.

This past week, the nine of us who were arrested that friday all had to come back to DC for our arraignment. For some of us, that meant flying in from Utah, long train or bus rides from Massachusetts, Maine, etc. For Jordan and I it meant pulling another all-nighter to drive in from Michigan. At 8am, Thursday morning, we met with our lawyers and we ended the day with a drug test at around 3pm. This is the not-so-sexy side of civil disobedience, the part where sacrifice starts to kick in and we are forced to face financial, personal, and professional consequences for our action. But at the same time, these past couple of days have been the most encouraging for me.

I see the beginning of a culture within our movement that is willing to support those who decide to take action even at the expense of their own future. I am beginning to see a movement with people that can find it in their hearts to give the little that they have to support those who they can call allies. I'm beginning to see a movement that is becoming financially independent, and with financial independence comes true mobility. Is the movement strong enough to support one another? Is it capable of making things like money less of a concern when taking action? I think it is.

Going to court on Thursday wasn't a walk in the park. I saw too many of my less fortunate black brothers and sisters in that room and too many people there for minor drug charges. The failure of our court system was hard to ignore- the true victims of our unjust society were criminalized while the true criminals were no where to be found. Yet there was still hope because in the middle of this scene was a row of individuals who were crazy enough to think that they could take on this institution...and there are hundreds who were starting to stand behind them and their action.

Even though Thursday, I was surrounded by those who force their laws on us, It also wasn't scary, nerve racking, or daunting- it was liberating. I am not alone. I have countless of people- some I don't even know personally- who are there to back me up. I want to see more of those seats filled with activists standing up for what is right. I want them to feel the same sense of relief that, despite the outcome, there is a whole movement of like minded individuals ready to bring about support in any way that they can- whether it be with time, money, or just encouragement. I believe the nine of us and the 21 who got arrested in the department of Interior are continuing to play a part in inspiring others to join us in tactful civil disobedience. A movement that has learned how to sacrifice individually and for one another is powerful. It's a force to be reckoned with!

Meeting Bidder 70- Stand With Me

Hi. My name is Tabitha and I care about earth. I care about our home- I care about the air we breath, the water we drink, and the food we eat. I care about that which sustains me and it which sustains other living things....I also care about people. I care about people more than I care about trees, soil, grass, pandas, cows, bunnies- I care about people's access to their basic need to clean air, water, and food. I care about the people who are oppressed through their withdrawn access to clean air, water, and food.I hate the institutions that care about neither people or the earth.

Though I have always cared about people a ton, I didn't always care about the gr

een things and the other stuff I live with. But my eyes were opened to the connection between people and the earth. My senior year of high school, my AP Environmental Science class turned my world upside down. That year I realized the connection between a healthy earth and healthy people. That our bodies will only go as far as how healthy the things are that we put in them. I also learned that there are individuals who would rather us have sick bodies if that means more money.

It was at that point, that i knew I wanted to do something about it.

When I went to college, I knew that the activism spirit that I had felt since I was young had to bloom soon- I decided to dedicate my major and my time to learning how the system worked so I could find the best way to take. it. down. My sophomore year, I realized that the only thing stopping me from taking down the system now wasn't 4 year in school- it was me. It was that year that I joined Greenpeace and Amnesty International at Michigan State. Through those groups I learned one of the most valuable lessons one can learn at my age- that there is power in my voice.

Can you stop with me and think about that statement? Go on, sa

y it to yourself, "There is power in my voice". There is POWER in your voice. My sophomore year i decided to stop being docile and to start become a good citizen- one who

maximizes all of my rights.

Unfortunately, my sophomore year I also found out how frustrating it was to be a good citizen- signing petitions, calling my congressmen, following politics, voting in elections, following ALL THE RULES. And yet for some reason no one cared what I had to say. My political weight was just not good enough. MY government told me that I was just not that important. They said instead that we can start talking when I either have a ton of money or a ton of people. You can guess what options I had to take.

Up until today that's what it's been for me- a numbers game. How many people can we get to this rally, how many petitions can we get signed, how many pledges, endorsements, phone calls, etc. etc. etc. I believed that there was power in my voice, but believed more in the power of many voices.

Today I met Tim DeChristopher, also known as Bidder 70. To make a long story short, Tim singlehandedly stopped the unethical selling of Utah land from the out going Bush administration to big oil and gas developers.

Well how did he do that? It was simple: he walked in, said he was there for the bidding, became bidder 70, and started out-bidding everyone in the room...he won 22,500acres of land at the price of almost 2 BILLION dollars.

Tim didn't have 2 Billion dollars, but he did it anyway. He decided to take matters in his own hands- he realized that there was a point where protesting with signs, petitions, and marches are only going to go so far. His one action stopped the bidding of 116,000 acres of Utah soil.

His voice has power.

After my chat with Tim, and after hearing him speak to a few of us tonight, there were two things I really took to heart: first- facts and figures never changed anyone's minds. The willingness to sacrifice the comforts of my life to take a stand does. Second- I need to shift my thinking from believing that only numbers can topple injustice to taking ownership of the idea that I have the power to topple injustice no matter how big.

Tim was in the breathing space of very powerful, intimidating, and influential people. He could have let the daunting gap between him and them get to him but he

didn't. Instead, he decided to look at the situation for what it was- people getting bargain prices for land they would rip to pieces just to bank on some non-renewables. He then decided that he'd much rather do something and face the consequences of committing a federal offense than sit in a room full of exploiters and do nothing.

There are too many things that I let pass by me, that I'm unwilling to take a lonely stance on. But that won't happen anymore.

My voice has power.

There is something to be said about the times we are in. They are interesting and one of a kind. I say it's time to stop WAITING for our generation to step up. Those who are already need to start walking, kicking some butt, and taking some names. I say lets stop this system. Let's stop corporate take over of our lives, our government, our homes, or bodies. Let's stop corruption, injustice, and out of control consumerism. Let's stop this move to more development, more degradation, more burning of bad things that choke our children and our trees.

I no longer call on my generation, but to those in my generation who sees the battle and are ready to fight. We don't need to wait for the masses to move mountains. The masses will move themselves in their own time. Instead, we need to be setting the example of what it means to draw a line.

GOT- Gulf Shores, Alabama

Time for some pictures. These are from the GOT's expedition trip to the Gulf Coast. We went there to bear witness to the Oil Spill that happened a few months back. It might be old news to the media but it's not old news to the residents who still have no means of work because of the lack of tourism and accessible fishes, the aquatic life that will continue to be drenched with oil and toxic dispersant, and to the ocean that will continue to be raped by countless oil spills that happen every day right under our noses.

From here they just looks like black specks of sand but if you look closer, you'll can see they're actually pulverized specks of oil. The oil patties (more below) are a mixture of oil and sand that's clumped together to make a sticky, mushy form. They come in various shapes and sizes and, lucky for BP and the government, look better on the beach than those blobs of oil. From far, they look like a bunch of smooth rocks.

Perspective on just how close these oil collecting ships and rigs are to shore. Definitely a prettier horizon than wind turbines...

We were finding these oil patties all behind the beach house we were staying at that week. Though the government deemed the beach to be clean and opened it to the public, there was still oil coming on shore like this clump here. You don't have to be a mother to know how easily a child can find these rock looking tar balls in their mouth. And yes. They are definitely still toxic.

**Sorry it took so long to upload all these pictures! Blogger wasn't working the first time I tried to post and I basically gave up on it until now. (yay for picture uploading abilities!!) I have TONS of new pictures I need to put up but this collection of my work wiped me out!**

Summer Readings

ONLY A FEW MORE WEEKS IN DC!!!!

I can't believe the GOT is almost over- i definitely recommend it to anyone who is serious about leading the movement in their own communities- changing the world through organizing and facing opposition in the eye. It's been a great experience and I cannot wait to go to the Gulf Coast to witness the oil spill and then to go back to university so I can start organizing.

BUT that is not what i wanted to talk about...well at least not this time around. As I said a few posts ago, instead of just listing off all these books i was going to read this summer, I'll list them off as I go along. Even though I am no where close to finishing that list, i still consider the 2 books iv'e accomplished a win- lol.

Don't Think of an Elephant

By George Lakoff

This book was written shortly after the 2004 elections and basically analyzes why the republican party has their act together while the Democrats do not. Lakoff states that people do not vote based on self interest but rather by frames (the values that you filter information with). He believes that in the US we operate within two frames- a strict father model and a nurturing parent model. Republicans have a strict father frame that they filter politics with and democrats have a nurturing parent frame they filter politics with.

It was a pretty good book, but after the first chapter things got repetitive. One thing that i didn't really like though is the division that he makes between Republicans and Democrats. I mean, i don't read a lot of current affair books but is there really that much hostility between the two parties? It makes me feel like the civil never ended. These divisions go beyond just political differences, we literally see opposing sides as less than human or as an enemy that will never change. The point of his book was to encourage the top dogs of the Democratic party to take note of what the Republicans did to pass all the bills they wanted- package their frame in a way that's sellible to get more American's on their side. But my question is if both parties start working in the same way, if they both successfully killed the independent vote, wouldnt we end up making this deep division between Americana's worse?

Sellout: The Politics of Racial Betrayal

This book was about the history and reasons of application of the word sellout in the African American community. Kennedy tackles the what we mean by selling out in the black community, the complexities of selling out to a race or being a race traitor, and how slippery of an identification 'Black' is.

It was a very good book. I think it makes some very interesting points and asks some very bold questions. Kennedy tries to bring to light that the community's quickness to jump the gun on the 'race traitor' waggon prevents us from opening up a dialogue that may be controversial but much needed. Even by writing his book, Kennedy will be fending off race traitor accusations. I think that african american's are so quick to call someone a sellout because we want so desperately to keep, if nothing else, our sense of community- we must stick together, we have a responsibility to help each other out of our oppression, and we support one another. That is all the black community know's to trust- each other, and that cannot change.

Right now i'm trying to get through Blue Gold: The Fight to Stop The Corporate Theft of the World's Water. So far it's really good but I hate to say, VERY one sided. Good thing i'm a little familiar with water privatization issues already. Update on that soon hopefully! and I'll probably make another GP semester update soon-ish too : )

Born to be WILD

June 11, 2010. The first day of World Cup South Africa 2010.

But more importantly (in a self centered sort of way), June 11 marks the day that I did the BIG CHOP. The short version of that is that I decided to cut off the chemically straighten part of my hair- which i have been doing since the single digits- and letting my natural curly/kinky hair grow out freely. so basically I went from this:

yea. pretty exciting. I wanted to make an update on my new look but i don't see why it's necessary to make an entirely new blog for it (after all, i already have 2 blogs to keep up with). Plus i don't have enough time to dedicate my free time to being a full time 'naturalist' and trying out/ reviewing/ researching all these different products and recipes for my hair...

Now. I hope you are wondering why i decided to go natural. Honestly it started by watching this history of Soul Train on Vh1 during black history month. specifically an episode where they were explaining how Soul Train was the first African American owned, ran, and hosted tv show in the US which had a lot of commericals that focused on making black beautiful- including black natural hair. It was then that i realized the connection between being natural and being comfortable with my african 'heritage'. From there came two other moments that pushed me over the natural hair edge- my last hairdresser appointment (where i realized just how badly my hair breakage was) and watching Good Hair by Chris Rock.

Good Hair made me really look at the idea of how much my hair means to me and how much a black women that lives in America sees straight hair as being related to 'pretty'. I'll let you in on a secret: I feel the prettiest right after i get a relaxer (or chemically straighten my hair); when my hair is so straight that i can feel my scalp, not puff. All i want is long black hair that is straight and falls down to the middle of my back. I feel beautiful with that hair, not with the hair that i already have- i'm ugly with this hair on my head.

To make an already long story short, i decided that I need to know what my hair is and what it looks like. I want to know what my hair likes to do, what it does in different circumstances, and what products it reacts to. The process of straightening basically strips the protein from your hair to make it fall straight and limp. no, my hair should be free to grow and curl and shrink and absorb and do whatever it wants- AND I SHOULD LOVE IT.

There are also some other reasons for this decision, like recognizing that permanently altering my hair on a regular basis originated from black ppl trying desperately to disown their black characteristics and look more white. On a certain level straightening my hair is literally like living oppression on your head- a daily reminder that i do not feel comfortable in my own skin, in the body God has given me to cherish and love, that all i want to do is look like someone else. I used to make the argument that straightening black hair was now a part of the African-American culture, but you can't always just forget where you came from. The emotional connection between beauty and straight hair for black women shouldn't be ignored.

There's also an environmental side to my decision that i didn't really catch on to until i chopped it all off. To go natural tends to apply to a lot of parts of your daily routine- it's a lifestyle change. The more natural the ingredients, the better for your hair. For natural black hair, a lot of chemicals and alcohols strip your hair of moisture that it desperately needs (natural hair thirsts for moisture like crazy). This allows me to start becoming sustainable in my hair routine. I even have the option now of making my own recipes for conditioners or moisturizers or whatever! Also, being natural frees me from having to go to the hair dresser ever month to use harmful and toxic chemicals that burn my forehead and cause breakage. Not to mention being responsible for all of the crap that must be in the water system thanks to those chemical relaxers.

GOT Post 1- Oil hearing with a side of politics

My bad for never updating- i feel like I'm working i'm so worn out every day >.<
So. WEEK 3!! I must say- loves the Greenpeace. The staffers are really nice and so are the other students in my program. These past 3 weeks we have focused on our leadership tendencies, how to relate with others on your team, what makes a team strong and efficient, as well as petitioning, campaign planning, phone banking, etc. All very useful and don't worry, i'm taking notes! : )

I think what i'm going to start doing is a feature for every GOT related post. so for this update, i'm going to feature the Oil hearing that happened this past Tuesday. That day we joined forces with the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) and went to the house building (i don't know the technical term) for the hearing. It was so intense and we ran into a lot of red tape- it's amazing how much injustice happens in our capital. I once blogged about the fact that sometimes i get so frustrated with our government that i just want to scream. I started considering the idea of bringing up my signs from home and screaming here but i'm pretty sure they'd tell me i'm not allowed to protest in front of the capitol- it's really sad that I can safely make that assumption.

i woke up at 3am that morning to wait in line at 5am. we were seemingly the first ppl there. then we got into the building at 7:30 and were the first ppl in line by 9:30. It was a public hearing with 50 seats. When we get inside, we find around 6 people already in line before us (they must had slipped in earlier on). As we are waiting in line the security guard tells us that there are actually only 15 open seats for the public...at a public hearing.

ok. bummer.
but we still have hope- we figure we can squeeze the rest in later. a few minutes before the doors open, 4 business men with expensive suits and greased back hair replace 3 of the the 6 people who slipped in before the doors opened. They apparently paid them off to stand there for them.

ridiculous.
at 9:30, we find out that there were only around 5 open spots when only 5 people were allowed into the hearing. unfortunate for our 4 businessmen, two of them were not part of that 5. Now apparently there is an agreement where when someone leaves the hearing their seat is up for grabs. however- that's not exactly the case like the 'reserved' seats were for the press and whoever the big oil companies had come with them (i.e. lawyers). So even though we were told that it might be impossible to get in like all the seats are reserved and there are only 5 open seats for the public, these two businessmen were able to work something out with the girl managing the line.

not ok.
I personally had to wait 3.5hrs more in an ever dwindling line of folks who lost hope in their chances of getting in WHILE standing, before i could get in. And i was close to the front of the line!!! (as in definitely in the top 15 ppl)

unacceptable.
I am a voter. I am a citizen.
It shouldn't be that hard for me to personally sit in a public hearing.

what really gets me is the idea that you can reserve public hearing seats. What's even worse was that the majority of the people who filled those reserved seats did not have to wait in my line or get up at 3am or stay standing for hours. they just walked on in. I was up from 3am that morning and stayed in that building until 2 all for a seat.
That's not right. and it makes me so MAD.

But It's that frustration that leads us to action. It is that and my faith that drives me to fight every day. It's also what leads ppl to do this:

the RAN kids attempted to give the CEO of Chevron a bottle of oil from Ecuador. She was arrested- as well as the girl with the sign behind her. just for standing up to injustice.

As I said before, This summer i am doing a training/internship with Greenpeace in DC and I know there are a few people who want an update on my 'journey' we'll call it. I did think about creating another blog just for my summer internship but honestly, it's such a waste of time. First i would have to add a 3rd blog to my list of blogs (and three's a crowd) and then i'd have to arrange the colors and the layout- time i don't feel like giving up. Plus, quite honestly, no one reads the vacation/trip blogs b/c they're kind of lame. At least if i keep my own blog, not every post will be about how awsm my time is here and what you're missing out on.

With that, i Start with the pre- GOT DC blog post!

I've been here for about a week- exploring and wandering. It's been pretty exciting. I've decided that I'm not that big on the city though- things close early and there's nothing to do after that. That probably means that i just need to find more things to do- i know there's a lot of free art shows and performances that happen (usually earlier but they happen). Plus, i think when my program starts I'll have more things to keep busy with.

Tomorrow is my first official day. I'm excited but at the same time nervous! I have no idea what to expect except for the vague promise of working on campaigns and training to become a better grassroots leader. I'm hoping that I'll be able to take away with me not only new tools but a changed mindset. my biggest hope is for this experience to help me think in a way that sees every occasion as an opportunity to campaign for environmental justice. I also want to work on my photography while i'm here **fingers crossed for plenty of new amazing photos!!!** I always tend to forget my camera. (so bulky!)

Survival Story- Flobots

Completely neglected my Flobots news and missed their new album release date. But I listened and, as always, was really exited to have my ears be blessed with the rare social commentary that the members have dedicated their band to- not impressed. at all. well just a little but I'll tell you why in a second.

I know i say I'm really picky with my music and that I'm almost never impressed with new albums, but I gave the flobots a lot of wiggle room. The fact that they do dedicate their albums to protest instead of numbing us with songs about petty love and narcissism, is heroic and scarce as it is. If the music wasn't the best, as long as they had a good message, i would have still liked it. PLUS I saw them at my local powershift and they definitely said they were joining the environmental movement- brownie points!!!

Their new album cover reflects that decision and I do appreciate the song Defend Atlantis, but most of the tracks just aren't structured properly. I don't know what happened, maybe they switched songwriters or someone was really off their game, but I cannot look past the sloppiness. lyrics didn't flow, the chorus' did not mesh, the music was off...i can't even put my finger on it. In short- it was an amateur album. Can this really be the same band that recorded Fight with Tools 3 years ago? because they were AMAZING!! I LOOOOOVED that Flobots- i with it was them that made my environmental anthem.

I'm crossing my fingers for an album 3 and that it will be better. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt (again) and say that the second album is always the weakest- just because you have to figure out how to follow up a good first. I know that this band has the potential because I highly doubt that someone can make 12 flukes in a row on one album.

**sidenote: did also enjoy the song White Flag Warrior. This was very well done. I'll give them that : )

A worthless thought

There's been a lot of talk about a lot of things recently and a lot of new ideas forming in my head that i have yet to make sense of. There's been a lot of events that have pressed against me and are in the process of forming me. Yet not everything is done working so i can breath.

Despite the transforming and the changing and whatever else it is, One of those things that have been bubbling in my mind is this idea of identity. Who we see ourselves as, who we feel others think we are, and who we want ourselves to be. I have come to the conclusion that I am not just a word. I am several different words but at the same time wordless. There is nothing that can describe who I am or what I am or who i will become. I guess that is why we all have names- not just for labeling but to create one word that can truly define us.

Schools Out but the Work is Never Over

I Am finally back home from another year at school. It's crazy how fast this part of my life is moving. Only 2.5 years to go (too much credits to take for a clean 4 year graduation >.<). However there is soooo much going on this summer i barely have time for the traditional break.

Like i mentioned a few entries ago i am doing a training program with Greenpeace this summer from June to August. I'm am exited and nervous and maybe a little scared. I think it might be the fact that I'm semi living life on my own- though not really because I'm still living in a dorm, with 2 other roommates, and i'm still doing a program so it's just like moving out to college all over again. I think sometimes we trick ourselves into thinking situations are more different than they really are.

I also have decided to be come much more read by the end of this summer (how that will happen with a 40hr work week i do not know) so i have a pile of books to read plus a list of books to check out from the library. And just to make sure I read everything, I am only going to post books after I read them :P. I kind of need to trick myself to be motivated enough to finish a book- it's been much too long.

It has been a crazy couple of weeks. This week is suppose to be pretty crazy too but hopefully i'm going to be a little more responsible this weekend and get some homework done (and of course, as i'm typing this, i have spent the whole day doing nothing but eating, sleeping, and listening to music).

This Tuesday was the kick-off for my "screamatthecapitol" event.
If you don't know, I've decided that every Tuesday at 4:30pm i'm going to go to my state's capitol and scream.

Yea i know. But i've just been so frustrated with our government recently. I'm so tired of signing petitions, writing letters, and calling senators about issues I care for and my voice being drowned out by special interest groups with heavier wallets, people with prestige or TV shows, and Party bickering. I feel like no matter which party i vote for (Dem or Rep) it's still going to be thrown away because there is no guarantee that my senator is going to reflect the need of his/her state or the whim of his party.

I am so fed up with Congress. If I am not registered as a party member, then obviously i do not believe or trust ether party to do right by me. Never should the polls say that the majority of Americans prefer one thing and congress decide to vote to pass another thing. That is not the democracy our nation was founded on. And I demand change.

Therefore, like no amounts of petitioning or calling or letter writing seem to cut it, I've decided to use my physical voice to get my message across:
STOP rigging my democracy
LISTEN to my voice- the voice that gave you power in the first place
and STOP piggybacking on the ignorance of the American people. Don't make it so hard and unknown for the citizens of this country to get a hold of you and voice their concerns.

I am fed up! and It makes me want to SCREAM.
My dream is for that some time soon, any concerned American will march down to their respective state capitol, host a sit-in, and at 4:30 just scream. Let the People speak for the people- and let them tell the bureaucrats in Washington that we have had enough.

But HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!

Though i had no special someone to spend it with, i still had a good time. My old roommate and I went shopping, dressed up, went out for dinner, and then to dessert. Last year i heard someone say this and since then it's revolutionized my view on Valentines day:
In the end, besides God himself- No one loves me more than me. So I celebrate V Day as a single who loves herself: i buy myself a gift (...or two) and i treat myself to my favorite sugary treats. Who knows what i want more than me right? It's like celebrating your own birthday but it's a lot less pathetic.

I admit that the mindset is a little narcissistic but i think i'm allowed to think about no.1 at least once a year : )

For all my single ladies, I created a flicker set for them- with a collection of photographs i took of a vase of flowers my parents sent me (yea, they're pretty amazing). I put up a bunch of quotes and pick-up lines about the V Day as well. idk, i'm pretty happy with it.

I have so much to do for tomorrow, and so little time to do it. I've just given up and decided to blog.

It's been a fairly hard week. Monday i picked up 3 tickets in front of my car, Tuesday i lost my phone in the snow (it fell out of my pocket but someone thankfully found it and gave it back); and Wednesday i lost my favorite orange hat. I would just blame all these things on bad luck but it was just me being an unorganized mess and not handling my possessions responsibly.

For tomorrow i have to turn in a specialization application, read 2 chp. for an honors option, and do two weeks worth of research for my internship. How that will happen i do not know.

Today was alright though. despite being notoriously late for a recitation, i discovered i got a 3.5 on my first essay and was even able to bump that up to a 3.6 with some convincing. I also think i found a great apartment to live in next year after days of searching (now i know i will HATE house shopping when i'm older- go figure).

No matter what happens, I believe it's good to count your blessings- if you don't then you would probably end up suicidal (all that negative energy!!!)

I'm really craving some good techno music. I was hoping Hot Chip would do that for me- but i was disappointed. the new album is a little too chill and the only song i liked was One Life Stand. I'll probably grow into it though. I've realized that my standards for my favorite bands are always higher than what they usually end up giving me. That makes me scared for Arcade Fire- they're my no. 1- I'll probably be let down hard...

I've actually just finished uploading my artwork to put on a CD for my application. I wish i could just include some of my photography but they are not school assignments.

A Brave New World

There are times when I feel like i'm at the center of a collision between my past, present, and future. it's so overwhelming, my mind can't even grasp it. This just happened to me a few days ago. I was reading my International Political Economy book and it's like i was very aware of what i was doing in the context of the interconnected reality i live in. I suddenly realized how small and insignificant I really was and yet I knew that there was a part that I needed to play in the grand scheme of things- but it's only for a split second. Does that happen to anyone else?

But anyway, that wasn't what i was going to blog about.
Francis Fukuyama, the author of Our Post-human Future is coming to my school next week and i've decided i wanted to hear him speak.
i wrote a very long explanation for this but i decided that i didn't want to make that long of blog post. Check out his writing- besides his explanation as to why human nature is something that should be preserved, i pretty much agree with him.

What is Technology but a reminder that man is not God. No matter how many thinner, faster, smarter, cheaper, cell phones come out, every single one of them are more than prone to fail on you. No matter how many steps we take forward in science, the margin of error will always find a way to sprout it's little ugly head. And think about it, we are a slave to technology.

We are a slave to our own creation. My life can take a tragic turn for the worst if my computer and my phone decided to crash. Every time my phone is lost or dead, i cannot function. I can't tell anyone about it, i don't have numbers, i don't have txting, nothing. Every time facebook dies on me, i don't have connections, i have too much time to kill, i can't do anything. God help me if the whole laptop went under- notes? papers? resumes? all in one liable machine.

Being a slave to technology is being a slave to man's failures. And the worst part is, i don't have to strength or the resources to break away from my bondage. I am forever brought down by the chains of progress. Thank God Jesus is coming back.
I know this a very weird and ironic thing to say on a blog post, but that doesn't mean I hate it any less.

I feel so bad for abandoning my blog this semester- but i've been working hard to try and raise my GPA, I hope I have more time next semester to update. Recently I've taken the time to look around- I just realized people in my major work 500x harder than the majority of other students in my university. Why did i pick such a hard major? I should have done something easy like communications.

In other news, I'm no longer working at AA, too many hours. I'm having a little bit of a crisis though- I'm in a style rut. I'm trying not to wear all AA (like it's now the majority of my wardrobe) but i feel like what i end up with is slightly outdated and a little boring. I desperately need to go shopping but i have absolutely no money to do so *hooray unemployment*
but that's enough complaining, as stated above- CHRISTMAS LIST!!! xD

So. The title of this post...sorry it's been over a month? School as been so hectic and i've got some extracurricular activities (and of course the shocker of me going to class and doing homework). However, i accidentally did not go to class today- it's a long story but basically i was locked out of the room...lol.

Enemies of the State

If you have been living under a rock this past week, you would have known that President Barack Obama gave a speech addressing the students of America and the stupid uproar that revolved around it. Though i am majoring in International Relations, i'll admit that i do fall behind on my news every so often- maybe i missed something but can someone tell me why it is that these conservatives americans- not the politicians, but the neighbors, the relatives, the brothers and sisters i go to church with, fight sooo hard against this man? He hasn't even finished his first year in office, what is it that Obama has done so far that is so threatening and evil that some feel the need to act like a wall every time he tries to make a step forward? I'm actually finishing this entry a few days after it says it was made (because blogger is weird like that) but if you listened to the Health Care speech on Wednesday, you would know that one republican congressman had the nerve to even yell out "lies!" in the middle of the address! mix that in with people using 9/11 as a tool to bash their president, the birthers, and of course the infamous tea parties (and things like it)- WHAT in the world has Obama done to receive so much disrespect, insults, and just pure hatred? Don't get me wrong, i do not believe that everyone should love him, you have a problem with our president fine! i respect that! I will do my best to understand your viewpoint, but there is disagreement, and there is disrespect. And the disrespect of one's president is a rebellion of one's president- that's called being a traitor to one's country. What signaled the success of our nation's new government early in our history was the fact that there was a switch in political parties and the federal government wasn't overthrown, though many people didn't like it, they respected the rules put in place and gave the new leader the respect they deserved.

You may be wondering if my current stance was the same when George Bush was still president, and i will say yes it was- even though I think Bush did a lot to screw up our country I still gave him the proper respect he deserved- not because i agreed with him but because i belong to a country who decided to vote him into office, because i respect our democratic system in America, i respect the people's decision to put that man into office- i may not have taken a bullet for him, but i recognized it was my duty as a citizen to respect him. It would be the same thing if John McCain won the election. I would hate it and wonder what kind of country i lived in, but i would NEVER saying that I want him to fail in these 4 years- instead i would hope for the best and do my part to try and find solutions for the matters at hand. Express your concern: that's good, healthy, and encouraged! but just blind hatred, pure malice- that's not part of our constitution and that for sure wasn't what this country was founded on.

That's the democracy i believe in and that's patriotism straight up. What i don't understand is why no one else believes in this? Why people who, all this time, called themselves the 'patriots' the 'lovers of democracy and America' do not hold this same view point. How is it patriotism if your love for your country is fleeting? How can you bleed red,white, and blue when you abandon the principles this nation was founded on the moment you don't get your way? A better question even, how is that not how is that not being a traitor? In my opinion that's even worse than burning a flag.

If you no longer want to stand by American Democracy- get up and leave. I don't need to hear your unconstructive complaining, it helps no one but the political agenda of these oh so 'holy' men you seem to follow without question. If the Antichrist was to pop up, it would probably be from your own self righteous party.

I know i just finished ranting but can someone, and i'm asking honestly now, tell me what it is that Obama has done to deserve, and be met with, so much hatred? but also, Is that which he has done so much worse that he deserves to get even more ill treatment than Bush did? Clinton did? Nixon did???

Someone needs to open my eyes or something because right now i have no other excuse for these people except to say they are racist unpartiotic traitors that should be treated as enemies of the state. That means you Rush Limbaugh.

Jesus Called

I was reading a post from 'Stuff Christians Like' and it was talking about saying that are, well said, when someone has moved on. He asked everyone to put down their own personal favorite sayings and one person wrote down "Jesus Called". I think i'm going to take that one.

I know personally i've relinquished my fear of death or dying- i know who i'm going to meet on the other side. But this talk of passing away and the attitude of the mourners made me realize that I'd rather have people honor my passing by being joyful- not unhappy. I, of course, realize that no one is going to be too joyful- i just died- but that spirit should be in the back of their minds. I love to laugh, i love to have a good time, i love to cheer people up, my funeral shouldn't be a Debby downer. There's a passage in 2 Timothy that i love, and when i read it i knew that this was what i wanted to be able to say by the time i was on my death bed:

For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. (2Tim.4:6-8)

I know that i want to leave saying "i've fought the good fight, i have finished the race- now Jesus is calling me to come home." How amazing it will be to be able to say those words. To know that i've done the will of my father, and that he has said 'well done, good and faithful servant. Come and dwell with me." It brings excitement into my heart. I wonder what other people, who do not know my father, feel about death. I wonder what kind of emotions go through their minds when they think about the moment their on that death bed. will they be able to know with confidence what and who is going to meet them when they open their eyes again? or is there an ever pressing 'what if...' on their minds when they play that last scene over and over.

I went to the beach last week and it was very refreshing- though i got sand EVERYWHERE.

Beaches are a lot like Disney World, when your there you hate it- it's uncomfortable, your hot, there's lines for everything and food is over priced. But when you look back and look at all the pictures and collect the few good memories you had while there, It seems so fun that you want to go through the whole trial all over again.

I definitely had more pictures that i took but for some reason the connection b/w my camera and my laptop is just not working and it refuses to let me upload like 4 pic's : (

I know, it's been ages-AGES
I've been so busy this summer it's ridiculous. The sad part is, It's not like i'm even doing anything exciting or too important. Studying for my econ courses have taken up most of my social life and Church activities take up the rest of my time- not like i mind the church stuff, i get to hang out with people i love, i just don't seem to have any 'Tabby time' anymore and less Tabby time means less blogging time yes?

Good news, i passed macroeconomics with an 83% despite falling ill with the flu (no i do not know if it was the swine) and my macro professor flaking out on me when it was time to take my make up exam (what a joker...). Bad news, i still need to pass microeconomics and that's the course i failed my first semester so we'll see how that goes... >.>

Lots to talk about! first, I did a very dangerous thing this past thursday- i went to Barnes and Nobles. This lead to me buying another book to add to my collection of book i need to read.
In fact here's a list of all the books i have bought and have not opened yet:

The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner (which i'll prolly never get to, i hate Faulkner why did i get this book?)

The book that i have added to my unread collection is In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan.
I am hoping to break this habit now with this book, then work my way back from there...

I've always been a firm believer of eating real food, not 'food science' but, lets face it, the less your food is tampered with, the more expensive it becomes...which is lame. I'll read it anyway though, and if it's persuasive enough i might have my mother read it too, maybe she'll change some of her beliefs : )

Second on the list of things to talk about, I've finally found a band that i'm excited for, They are Twin Berlin

I decided i REALLY like they're style- I can't wait for their first full album. Hopefully it won't be a disapointment like the Ting Tings (i was sooo excited for their first album too but the only good songs they had were the ones that they had out already...)

I realized i'm not as happy and inspired when i am home than when I am at school, i haven't even picked up my camera (well actually I did but it was really only once...). I think next summer i will only stay home for a short period of time and just take summer classes. Of course i think i would feel bad about missing out on stuff with church too so we'll see.

Right now i'm trying to find a job with no luck- which i'm upset about because without a job i have no money and without money my wardrobe is bland =/
Summer is not my forte when it comes to my sense of style- half because of the parents (they're pretty conservative) half because i rely on layering more than amazing pieces of clothing. So basically my outfits have been nothing but t-shirts and jeans (eeeeewww)
And to add to that i've gained a whopping 11lbs. this semester so none of my old shorts fit! T_T
(mind you it's not like i've hit 130 yet but i don't think i've ever gained so much weight in my life).

But enough about my insecurities and slightly annoying situation. I have a new person in my life and his name is Bernhard Willhelm :P

I was reading through Vice's Fashion Issue 2009 (ugh- like such a hipster, i knoooooow...)
but they did a little interview with Mr.Willhelm and i looked him up (i could tell by his picture that i would love his work) and i think he's amazing.
The first collection I saw from him was his fall winter 08-09:

I like this collection a lot- i was slightly disappointed with the spring and fall 2009 RTW- i dunno but he's playing with garbage size fabric and tying them up with like a rope...but i found some pieces that i did like somewhat : )

and no, i do not like that thing on her head. I just think that the dress is probably cute without the head peace on it.
Idk, i think the fall collection looks more like a spring collection and vice versa. but I still have faith in him- I'd rather he go bold and over the top than keep it safe and stick with something like oh i dunno- black and gold (see page 2)

Back home for the Summer

My phone died. i guess it just couldn't take my hectic lifestyle :P
I am also back home and these first 4 days have been uneventful- and boring. I want to go away somewhere and have fun, meet new people, start all over once again. I'm tired of dealing with some of the things i've left back home- and yes i decided to be vague and moody.

Friday was my last day at school and the day before i took some pictures with a friend:

I've been bombarding this thing with pictures lately :)

My last roll of film- i think that they turned out nice but i know that if i had a darkroom, some photo paper, and lots of time to waste i would be able to make better prints than the ones CVS did. PLUS i ordered a CD to go along with it and the pictures look waaay better on the prints and i don't know how to save some of the other pics and i really wished i had my DSLR for some of the pics that i took but didn't turn out and....

No, my SLR did not die...

Like, two days ago, i decided to take and develop some pictures from the few days the sun decided to pop it's little head out
and last night i went on a scanning spree and scanned all the Christmas pictures i liked
So here they are (btw, i decided that scanning does no picture justice- even more reason to get that bloody Nikon D60! >.<)

This is my kitty happy! (who i had to leave back home >.<)

So that's about it! hopefully i will be able to finish my next roll soon! and, if i play my cards right, a beautiful Nikon might be all mine by the end of today :3

So you know what's lame?
Recently, i decided that i want to end up with a career in environmental law (it was either that or just international law) and be apart of the political and judicial fight against international environmental injustice and degradation and whatever (ok, so that part isn't the lame part). so i decided that i would try to get myself involved in Greenpeace and see if i can become active in my own community this summer (like it's the end of the school year). BUT stupid Greenpeace USA is such a piece of CRAP that i can't navigate myself to anything useful! i always seem to end up on the same pages or to freaking Greenpeace Canada or SOMEWHERE THAT I DONT NEED TO BE (that was the lame part).

But in the spirit of my unsuccessful search to become more active in the fight against environmental abuse, i decided to put up some eco-friendly stuffs that i've had my eye on :)

I just bought a dress from this online store called Ruche and i noticed that they had an eco-friendly section soooo i picked my faves :P -

Oh and btw ur gonna have to use ur imagination when looking at their clothing- they look cuter on a person :P

This one wasn't in the eco-friendly section but in the handmade section which i still deem to be sustainable :)

I also stumbled upon this website called thegreenloop.com which had a lot of sustainable designers and their items there (plus a little blurb for each designer which was helpful! :D) so here's what i found from there:

Finally, like i have this delema of wanting to be more outdoors-like yet hating nature, i can't help but be drawn to this compost mixer thing that one could even put right in their kitchen- IT'S LIKE COMPOSTING FOR DUMMIES!!! xD

I saw this thing on a HGTV special about green living- it occured to me that getting this would give my mother no excuse for throwing away bio-degreadables and my father no excuse for buying pesticide rich fertalizer :P

And just as a side note- all these things are well and good (just like going vegan or using stairs or biking everywhere) but it has become more obvious that 'going green' on a personal level is not going to do much good for the planet- what would really make a difference is becomeing more involved in ur local communities, our nation, and even the global community in the fight for sustainability. It's too late to "go green" as individuals, the stress that we put our planet in forces us to start acting within the big picture now.

and on another side note- Don't think that i'm one of those "Save mother nature" kind of people. My support of sustainable living goes along with my desire to help people. I feel like if we make an effort to become more sustainable on an international level, we solve many of the problems that face developing countires like environmental injustices, natural resource degredation, water pollution, etc.

Anywhooo... I was doing my rounds and i found this lovely dress on modcloth (well two lovely dresses) BUT this particular lovely dress i'm upset about because there's only one left AND it's not in my size. Plus i am perfectly willing to spend the $75 to get it... DARN!

This is the kind of spring dress i would LOVE to have- i think that when i thought of my springy wardrobe i saw it as kind of child-like; Alice in Wonderland maybe?...i feel like i've heard that before... O.o

but think about it, a cute grey cardigan some purple or blue flats maybe? even red or yellow! the possibilities!!! :D

BUT it doesn't matter how much i love this dress, i cannot have it. Yesterday i ended up going home for the spring break!!! :D
tho i will most likely be doing hw (booooo). =/

Earlier on this week tho i was in my dorm room and when i went to bed, there was this crazy *CLICK* sound that came out of nowhere. I was so freaked out cause, obviously the first thing that came to mind was "omg! whose there? who is making that noise? did i accidentally kick something off of my bed? is it a ghost or demon or something? O.O" I eventually calmed down but then the idea came to me- that kind of stuff must happen all the time. There must be thousands of things that crack or creak or squeek for no particular reason whether or not we are there. Maybe this is just me but for some reason i feel like all movement should stop when i leave an empty room. Like nothing should fall or or make weird noises or shift or anything: if i leave a still room, that room must remain still.

Isn't it kind of weird thinking about a crumpled up ball of paper or plastic making a funny sound spontaneously when you aren't there? or a book randomly falling off a shelf for no apparent reason when u cannot be present witness it?
It's like all this potential energy is just built up in some things, waiting to be used and you are probably not there for most of it. Idk, it was just a random thought.

Yes i am insane.

but i did end up changing my mind AGAIN when it comes to dslr's. But this time i took a completely different root and decided to go with the Nikon D60. It is a beautiful camera and i know that Linnea has one- and might i add she takes lovely pictures with it- and it's a nikon so i made my choice.
but this time, i'm almost positive i'm sticking to it =3

On an even lighter note:
ZOMGGG!!!!Pete Doherty is coming out with a new album!!!!! xD

thanks to my oh so lovely friend Andrea and her daily use of google reader i was able to find out this wonderful news =3

I feel like my obsession with Pete Doherty is a little unhealthy- him being a druggie and a crazy messed up guy (i mean, the man makes is kitty snort coke!!! >.<)- but he is brilliant! His lyrics, his voice, his skill with the guitar: it's all to die for and i honestly don't care how insane he is, he is a beautiful messed up, old time rocker to me =3. If you didn't know, Pete was a member of The Libertines and is a member of Babyshambles (who i'm pretty sure, have not broken up yet...well i hope not...)

His solo album, Grace/Wasteland is suppose to be released March 16th (link to his single "last of the English roses")
idk, we'll see when the actual album comes out but i'm still excited none the less- Pete trying to do his own thing again, very good.
Hopefully it will kind of be like a Brittney Spears turn around but better ;D

Well i Thought it was Cute...

My friend and I decided that we were going to meet on a weekly basis at Starbucks to do a little devotional together and just encourage each other as sisters in Christ, so this friday we started the pattern that, hopefully, will follow through till the end of the semester : )

Right now we're going through Hebrews and, i must say, Hebrews is a very vital book for all Christians (not like any of the books in the bible are not) because it really explains the mechanics of God's kingdom and exactly what Jesus' role is in relation to us and God.

If you haven't noticed already, i have started my more God centered blog (which you will find a link to on the side). I'm just telling you cause i know i said i would ^_^
I think it really does help me in terms of keeping me accountable for doing my devotions. That's just because if i don't; there isn't a post for it, and it's quite obvious that i messed up :P

On a lighter note! Spring break is coming up and i DEFINITELY need to start packing and studying for my midterm and my Bio Exam (booooo >.<) but hey! i think i'll manage to pull it off ;) I must say, i did update the flickr page and i was a bit upset that no one commented one of my outfits that i just loved!!! Soooo i decided that i am going to put it up here as well :P

Miss Sixty is my new Love

Yesterday i was having a conversation with my boss and like i am currently situated in Michigan, he started ranting about all the problems the state was facing. From what i got from him and other Michiganders that i have spoken to, Michigan is a state that has been stabilized by the automotive industry- especially GM. Even before the recession, Michigan had been suffering from job loss and the like. Because of the loss of industry in Michigan we find more of the younger generation going to school here and leaving or just leaving for school and a jobs entirely.
My boss asked me the question 'what do you think is Michigan's biggest money maker now a days?' I said i didn't know and he responded 'exactly! we don't have one. The only other thing that could be a possibility is education.'

I told him that i feel like Michigan should use their education to invest in their young people (eww i sound ooooold :P). For example, if Michigan's good universities make instate tuition low **EDIT* Someone called me out on it so i really meant to say 'made instate tuition EVEN LOWER'*and give their graduating students stepping stones to start building new industries (starting with alternative fuels lets just say...), there would be a nice group of young professionals who now have a reason to stay in Michigan. And that new young work force will be able to start the mending process.

I think Michigan is actually quite lucky that they do have some good schools. I just don't understand why nobody utilizes it! If any country wants to boost their dying economy or to build an economy at all, it has to be through the education of the next generation. but even more than that, that country has to also make sure that generation ends up coming back and using their knowledge to help instill growth in their own nation. The same for any state.

So the past few posts have been very serious and very spaced out. mostly because the times when i did feel like posting something was after a deep thought or a revelation of some kind.

But, going along with my motto. i think one has to always step back from their life hectic lives and just stop for a little while, appreciate the sun that's shinning, the snow that's falling, the rain that's soaking your jeans- let your mind wander, or think nothing at all; take a break!!!! SO! with that being said, i feel like it's time for me to let my mind wonder and as it was wondering, i feel the need to look up pictures of the infamous Agyness Deyn xD **EDIT: So, i guess it's not obvious- Agyness Deyn is a model ;) **

i'm absolutely IN LOVE with her!!! her sense of style is amazing and i love her look and i love...well... everything about her! my goal is to wake up one day and come to the realization that i am a black, shorter version of Agyness =3

How My People Suffer.

So This semester we are focusing on Globalization and for this assignment that i have, i needed to pick a developing country and record it's MDG goals and blah blah blah...
anyways! i chose, for this specific project my homeland Jamaica *nuf respect* and my friend sent me this video that talks about Jamaica and how it has been impacted by globalization.

The documentary is called Life and Debt: Globalization and Jamaica
It's is by Stephanie Black and it was released in 2001

it's a long one (like an 1.5hrs) but it's worth the watch ^_^

just watching this documentary just makes me feel more obligated to go back to Jamaica and help my people. That's my country that's suffering- a nation of strong people; of proud people.
They don't take crap from no one and yet they are forced to do it anyway. In every Jamaican i saw interviewed i could hear an echo of my father. There's real passion and concern and willingness to understand what is going on and to tell everyone you can that you are not ok with this.
Maybe i'm biased but i don't think you see that kind of attitude anywhere else.

I've been thinking a lot lately

It's taken the whole month of January for God to get it through my head how important it is that i make sure i read his Word every single day.

So I went to church on Sunday and my amazing pastor just so happen to talk about the Bible and it's importance in a Christian's life (you will find a link to the series here- the service i'm talking about is 'The Bible Declassified' i recommend watching the video just because i think it helps to see him as well...and his props and hand gestures :P...). I think it's just funny how God does that sometimes. Like he knew that this was an issue with me and he knew that this has been something that i've been struggling with but just to hear it sometimes makes all the difference. i just had to say "Ok God, i get it! i knoooowww...." but i'm still glad he called me out on it. I am happy to say tho that i have been doing my devotions daily since sunday (i know, i know that's only two days tabby... :P) and that is how i came across the verse above.

If you have been following my blog, you know that i've been feeling awfully tired lately and kind of at a time when i just want to live and exist in peace. This verse just says it to me because it says that you find that peace and that quietness by dwelling in righteousness. Righteousness= Chirst-like and being Christ-like means working on ur relationship with Jesus and through him God (i would explain how i connected everything together but that can easily be a long explanation and i'm not really up for it right now :P). So basically, i can fiiiind that peace and that rest by just dwelling in God! The One thing that i can fully trust to always be there and to keep His Word!!! This is a message that i've heard and has been said many times but i haven't truly understood it until now. And that's why God is amazing- he's just full of surprises ^_^.

On the subject of faith, i have kind of been meditating on the idea of having a dedicated blog for things of God and the Church and my relationship with both. Of course, i don't mean i won't write the occasional Jesus moments here as well but i think it may motivate me more to regularly do my devotions by having a blog there to write about my findings. I'll let you know when it's up and ready :)

Their music is pretty off beat and really really chill (some of their songs are too chill for me...) but i do enjoy the song "Steal The Blueprints" and "all i do" while Andrea loves the song "Snowblind"

School just slapped me in the face this semester. To the point where i did nothing today really but get up, go to chinese class to do a presentation, and passed out after talking to my buddy on skype :P.
I don't really have much to say today but i feel weird knowing that i haven't really updated this thing....

Last night i think I've been bitten by the spring bug because i've just been longing for some warm weather!!! Honestly, I'm not as creative with my outfits when it gets warmer but, i want that all to change this year! so I have decided that there are some staples that i must have in order to enjoy the spring/summer of 2009 Tabby style:

Now i think that i lean more towards having a more whimmsical/ boho/ hippie/ airy look during the warmer weather- lots of pastels (creams, pale pink, pale green, and the like).
inpirations? (warning: i may be reusing a few of these pictures but hey! it's good to recycle ;D)

so that's kind of a taste to what i'm going towards :P
idk, i think i'm just tired of being so blah when it's warm out and the sun is shining, all that light should inspire me! soooo that means more dresses, and sandles, and skirts and blouses and hats, and scarves, and... (well you get my point =3)

Alloy.com has some REALLY cute gladiator sandles that i would just love to own ^_^
when they first came out, i kind of hated these kind of sandles but the look started to grow on me.
i'm also really want a flowy white dress. I kind of like this one here.
I want some nice shorts as well. like i found these cool looking shorts here from uban outfitters but i could probably just make those myself :P (well with my lack of skill you never know...)

Which One?!?!?!!! >.<

I think change is an enemy of the old- change and time.
Because with time comes change and who wants the good things in life to end. that has been on of the lessons i have learned this break, nothing lasts forever. Every moment has to end. Every laughter has to stop, every hug has to cease, every kiss has to part, every friend has to say good bye, every business has to close down- nothing in this world is timeless
ah! but note that i said nothing in this world- Because there is one good thing that never changes and that's God.

It's taken me a while to understand why it is we worship God because he is unchanging and everlasting- but you see i was a child then (or at least younger). Now i understand how much heartache comes with knowing that everything around you changes. All the good time you've experienced and all the memoires that you have collected and all the people you have met, all of those things come to an end! but God never comes to an end- all his good never cease and He never changes

Today, i've had to make a life changing decision: what Digital SLR i want to start saving up for
(because, it's not like my parents will pay for it :P)- i'm down to the Canon Rebel XSi (which i believe i had on my christmas list this year- well this past year :P) and the Nikon D90 (which wasn't even in the picture until my friend put that idea into my head =/...) The Canon i can probably get for waaaay cheap b/c i already have a canon rebel and i can just buy the body and use my own lens BUUUUUT the Nikon seems to have even better features and i think that maybe a change would be nice... i dunno!!! >.<>view feature...

But the real question IS, would the extra $400-$600 be worth it if i get the Nikon D90? I mean, image quality wise, the Nikon is a bit brighter on the screen but besides that, the mega pixles are about the same and the only real big difference with the Nikon D90 is that it has a HD video feature as well. I suppose, once i've written it all down, the canon would be the smarter buy for me right?

Anyway, here are the camera's in question:

And this is the Nikon D90 (also, another plus with this camera is the amazing lens it comes with- but i guess i could always just buy another lens for the canon right?)

I know it's a bit late but i still think it's necessary to open up the new year with a new year post ^_^.

I think it's times like these that you start remembering how long a year is. I mean, this time last year i was a senior in high school stressing over my University of Chicago interview, trying not to fail AP Lit. and Comp., and probably trying on my recently bought prom dress (which was purple and amazing!!!)
I mean, just this past June i graduated and just this past summer i went on my one month missions trip to Italy and just this August i attended MSU!

It's crazy how easy it is for time to just slip through your hands. it's kind of scary actually b/c that means it's very possible for me to find myself a 40yr old living in an apartment somewhere sitting in the kitchen and thinking about how i wasted those few precious years i had doing absolutely nothing. I think that time passes quicker as you get older. maybe that's why it's easier to remember things that happened to you as a child- things took forever back then. I'd rather it be that way...

The point is, i finally understand why people say that time is a precious thing. It's irreplaceable yet so easy to throw away- I don't think i can consider my first 18 years a waste, i feel like i could have done more but not too much more. These few years to come, however, are precious. There's so much to do! i want to love, i want change, i want to experience everything and anything, i want to make a difference and i want to savor every moment of it.

I don't believe in making new year resolutions because i have a bad habit of getting really depressed when i don't live up to my own standards. Not saying i don't have goals, i just don't want to put them in writing because i'm afraid that i might not meet them.

One that i'll write out, because this is one that i must meet by the end of this year,is i need to make sure that i have my time with God on a daily basis.I know that meeting that goal this year will help me meet many of my other goals as well.

Crystal Castles-

I think i would LOVE them if it weren't for the fact that I hear their album like EVERY OTHER DAY at work T_T. But i still really really like them, and even though i kind of wince everytime a track of theirs plays on my shuffle, i can't help but dance to their beat =3. I can't even tell you what my favorite song is from them cause i kind of love them all

What happens when it's early morning and you have internet

So i was doing my rounds on the Internet this morning- i woke up randomly at like 4am so i decided to pick up my laptop and wonder aimlessly around the internet (that means facebook, last.fm, blogspot, myspace, and youtube :P). now while on youtube, i was watching some random videos from youtubers starting with littleradge, then robofillet, then some random ppl and finally to halfscottishguy. I was watching halfscottishguy's video named food for worms (which you will find a link for here) and he brought up the issue of religion. Now i know that religion is a touchy subject and if anyone is just passing by and sees this post almost all of those persons would automatically exit from the screen and move on with life
I can't blame them, the topic has the power to tear families apart
yet still i find it a subject that i don't mind talking about anyway because, if you know me, i am a christian and i do love Jesus.
again! if anyone had stayed long enough to get to the previous line, you probably automatically exited this page and moved on with life- probably cursing me a little while you did it.

now then, for the ones that i didn't lose, i hope you would read my post to the end and maybe leave a response for me- i don't know if anyone will or not but it would be nice to hear from someone.

Ok, so first off i wanted to just point out some of the things that HSG talked about in his video. On the topic of religion being a bad thing i agree fully with him. How is it that being 'religious' or believing in something fully and strongly is a bad thing? I understand the value of science and i understand the value of reason and i understand the value of proof but we are humans- we are people. we are different from what this world consists of. I have a mind, i imagine, i have complex thought. i love, i want, i need, i feel pain, i suffer, i fear. I am. Together we as people make a community- we make ourselves a tribe, a society a civilization! All civilizations at some point or the other make themselves a set of rules because they all come to the conclusion that there is a wrong and a right. You will never find any place ever that feels like anything goes. There hasn't and never will be a place on this earth where there will be a system that accepts there is no wrong or right. so in short, we have a conscious! how do you explain the idea of having a conscious? Science can explain a lot of things but it can't explain everything. I believe that there i a moment in every persons life that cannot be explained. There will be a point in time where you know something happened- if you tell anyone they might be able to explain it away, but you know, you know that there was something more that was going on in that moment. Science won't back it up and there is no proof to it but what you saw, felt, and experienced yourself- and yet it was still real.

If there is no such thing as magic, if there is no such thing as spirituality then why is it that so many people all over the world have had ridiculous supernatural moments? yea, i don't believe most of them either but still, there must be a reason for these encounters that cannot be explained (or maybe the yearning for such encounters?)

Anyway, back to HSG's video- he also mentioned something that i felt compelled to stew over a little. It was the idea of not forcing your beliefs on anyone else. That's the excuse and the warning that is used so often now a days that i think one should rethink the meaning of that phrase. What, really, is considered forcing your beliefs to another person? At what point is it considered force? Is it possible to just have a discussion about religion? is that considered forcing? I mean, if you know me, i'm a very argumentative person- not because i want to be annoying...usually...but because i like to be challenged. I like to push ppl and i liked to be pushed back- idk maybe there's not a lot of ppl like me out there. But i would think that religion would be a touchy yet interesting subject to have a conversation about- if both parties are willing. Ah! so that may be the problem!! sometimes both parties are not willing. But if someone is doing something like, oh i dunno... a blog? or a vlog? or anything like that? How can that be considered forcing your beliefs on others? the viewer has the option of tuning in or not- why must we say "I don't want to force my beliefs on theirs" when your not? all your doing is putting the belief that you feel is true out there for people to see and either take or leave.

Ok, to HSG's question- Do i believe in an afterlife? What do i think happens when we die?
HSG does not believe in anything- that there is nothing after death. Just darkness. I actually can understand how that could be a very releasing thought. It gives you the freedom to think that one should not waste time with foolishness and should live life to the fullest, go out, be! and then when you die, you have peace...
but what if that isn't the case? what if you wake up again to find out that death is not the end and that there is something more? I'm not going to use this to inject my own belief in God but the question still holds. What if you are wrong? We are wired to believe that there is something more that what this life is. Yea, i think in a society where progress and science runs ramped, ppl try to explain away the fact that there is nothing more and no supreme being but the idea still lingers in one's mind. No one says "but there is nothing." and just walks away without giving the idea a second thought.

What also stuck me in the video is the idea many people have now a days about their own personal beliefs. "this is what i believe happens" "this is who I think God is" "This is how I think we go to heaven"- we can't all be right if something happens after death. If we are all right and our afterlife caters to the belief system that we want then we accept the fact that we are all Gods (the Mormons don't look so crazy now do they?) and that we have the power to control how our heaven will be when we know we have no control over anything in the first place. If there is right and wrong, how is it that there can be no heaven AND hell? is the idea of a hell something that is feared? does it make one face up to the idea that some things in their life may have been wrong to do? If there is right or wrong, why believe in just a heaven? it makes no sense, logically speaking, to get rewarded after death just for the heck of it? if there isn't right or wrong, then why would there be a reward for just dying? If one believes in a heaven, there must be a kind of hell.

Of course, one may ask- "well Tabby, what if you're wrong?"
my answer is simply that i don't believe that i am wrong- in fact i'll go on to say that i know that i am not wrong. That i because i fully and totally, with all my mind and my being believe that there is a God and he has a Son named Jesus and he put his words into a book called the Bible. I can try to explain away why and how everything and anything could happen but in the end it wouldn't matter because some things in life can't be explained away. there is a layer of reality that should be recognized in one way or another that doesn't follow the rules of science.

I think people who don't have true faith, i mean a faith that you wake up thinking about and obsessing about, cannot understand what it means for one to know what they believe in is true. That is because that person has put all their trust, more trust than they would put on a life long best friend or themselves, into that faith. When you put all of yourself into something that is above human error there is no longer any 'i believe' there is only 'i know.' Or else, it means that you really are not sure and there fore you do not have all trust in what you are saying-it is prone to error.

That's all i have to say. Again, i do not believe in apologizing for my post because I am stating what i believe on my own sight. Leave a message if you like- i would enjoy reading something like i'm still on break ^_^

I took some pictures of today so i'll update that when i get that film developed (so you can guess i did not get that dslr for chrstmas :P). What i DID get was a record player! =D
it's not the cool vintage one like the one i put up here before but it's nice anyway. actually it kind of reminds me of the 90's (don't ask me why...) but it's good, now i just need some
records to play and another needle- i umm, actually broke it trying to put the needle guard thing on it- yea it's a little ironic :P

i FINALLY got out of the house today... and i'm happy i did.
There was a terrible snow storm on friday so i sadly couldn't follow through with my plan to go out and attempt to take some snowy pictures... i want to get at least a roll in before i leave home.

I've been emotionally drained these past few days and i think it has something to do with being in the house for too long. I have come to the conclusion that very few people can be fully content with being by themselves for long periods of time- of course maybe that's just me =3.

Decided I'd put up my outfit today just because i was able to steal my mother's very nice camera for a while and because i don't think i really have done that recently...
( haven't even updated my flickr page since like forever!)
